Uplifting, I'm not so sure about that!
"Uplifting!"
"Inspiring!"
These were the accolades on the DVD box for "Born into Brothels." I was depressed, if anything, after watching this movie. I walked away with the realization that the filmmaker helped 8 children out of hundreds, or thousands? And of the 8, the success was marginal at best, for at least half of them.
If anything, this movie was humanizing. It was very powerful to be reminded that those poor people on the other side of the world that we don't think about are people just like us. Some of them looked just like my nieces and nephews, despite not looking like them at all.
Whatever you do, watch the special feature that revisits these kids 3 years later. I found that to be the uplifting part of the story. Kudos to Zana Briski for what she did. Despite my opinion expressed above, she did a great thing, both for those kids, plus the larger population by publicizing their plight.
I rate "Born Into Brothels" at 3 Boos.
