The Boo Rating System

The Boo rating system will be a zero-based six-point rating system. A partial Boo shall never be awarded. While always left to the discretion of the rater, a guideline to the ratings might be as follows:

  • 5 Boos - Outstanding. Cannot stop thinking about. A movie a Boo will remember for years. This level of Boo should be awarded very rarely.
  • 4 Boos - Upon exiting this movie a Boo might think, "I want to see this movie again." Would encourage friends to see this movie.
  • 3 Boos - A solid movie. Most movies a Boo would see should fall in this category.
  • 2 Boos - Disappointing.
  • 1 Boo - Attrocious. An embarrassment to admit having seen this movie.
  • 0 Boos - Walked out of.

Okay, I can buy the fact that you have this rating system. And, I can also agree that the "boos" are categorized fairly evenly.

But, how does one classify a movie like the cult classic "Napoleon Dynamite" which must be seen repeatedly in order gain more and more humor for the movie and/or its characters?

There does not seem to be a category for "MUST SEE MORE THAN ONCE." You may want to consider a special "boo" category to cover those kinds of movies.

You raise an interesting point. Here's how I see it playing out. It will be difficult to know that a movie is a "must see more than once" movie until such time as you've actually seen it more than once. I foresee in a scenario such as "N. Dynamite" I would rate it as 2 Boos on the first viewing. (As is usually the case with so-called cult classics, the first viewing of the movie often leaves the viewer underwhelmed.) It is only upon that second and third viewing, as the majesty begins to reveal itself, that the Boo rating will climb to 3 Boos and then on to 4 Boos.

It is definitely the policy at BooMovies that the ratings can evolve over time. Factors such as multiple viewings, and whether the movie stands the test of time will definitely be taken into account.

I'll have to give more thought to whether a "special" Boo rating is merited for this class of movie, or whether we'll rely on the commentary that goes with the rating to convey the importance of multiple viewings.

Thanks for your suggestion. I'll definitely keep it in mind.
